The Coalition
CSACEFA is a national coalition of Civil Society
Organizations (CSOs)
working on Education issues in Nigeria.
Forty (40) Education NGOs who came together in the run-up to the World Economic
Summit in Dakar in April 2000
formed the coalition. CSACEFA developed a core set of positions and attended
the Dakar World summit to join in the call for quality education for all. The
coalition has since expanded its membership to over one hundred and forty (140)
CSOs covering 29 states of Nigeria
and has been engaging and inputting to education policy issues both at local,
national and international.
The Vision
CSACEFA envisages a vibrant Nigeria
in which every individual has a right to access and attain quality education
that enables one to achieve dignity as well as contributing to the sustainable
development of our nation.
The Mission Statement
CSACEFA exists to mobilize, co-ordinate, facilitate
and advocate on education issue from a Civil Society perspective. CSACEFA also
seeks to provide mechanisms to increase Civil Society involvement in policy
formulation and decision-making as well as in implementation of education
delivery in Nigeria.
The Roles and Mandate
CSACEFA is not an implementing agency, and where projects are deemed appropriate,
these will normally be carried out through its membership with CSACEFA focusing
primarily on lobbying, advocacy and campaigning on policy issues. The
Facilitating Committee will develop transparent criteria and processes to
enable this. CSACEFA shall only represent its members on EFA issues within the
context defined by the Mission,
Vision, Goals and Objectives and members are not permitted to carry out
activities under the auspices of CSACEFA, except with the express knowledge and
approval of CSACEFA’s
Facilitating Committee.
The Policy Target
CSACEFA has been engaged in policy work with Civil Society, the Federal
Ministry of Education, the National and State legislators as well as with
International Development Partners in Nigeria.
CSACEFA also engages and contributes to International policy issues through
direct representation of positions as well as through ANCEFA and GCE,
especially as a key participant in the Global Week of Action
The Structure
Membership is open to all Civil Society Organizations who have activities,
which support and/or lead to the attainment of EFA goals. Members should be
organizations registered at least at the Local Government level. The coalition maintains a consultative status and
adapt a flat, non-hierarchical, non-bureaucratic structure.
Membership of the coalition shall be by a registration fee and annual
subscription. It's activities
are co-ordinated by an
eight (8) members Facilitating Committee a gender balance. Members of
Facilitating committee are elected for a two year term of Office. The
Facilitating committee is led by an elected moderator whose functions include
convening and initiating issues, while decision making is by the consensus of
the Facilitating Committee. The Facilitating committee have at least four meetings in a year, two
of which is Face to Face, while the coalition has an Annual Consultative
Meeting (ACM). The work of the coalition is managed through a small secretariate which reports to the
Facilitating Committee.
